Tips for Selecting Paint Colors

Repainting your home is a great way to transform its look, curb appeal, or even its style. Painting is probably the easiest and most inexpensive way to refresh a home without undergoing renovations. As Northern Virginia paint experts, we do recognize it can be tough to select a paint color, so we thought we’d offer some tips.
                1) Inspiration. Look for inspiration to select a color. There are several places to look, including our last post where we discussed color trends for 2020! We also suggest browsing the website of paint companies such as Sherwin WilliamsBenjamin MoorePratt and Lambert, and Farrow and Ball. Look for additional color inspiration on Houzz.com and at retailers such as Crate and Barrel, Pottery Barn, and Restoration Hardware. We’re always happy to provide guidance with color selection. Clients with a new project are entitled to a one-hour free color consultation we offer with a professional interior designer.
               2) How do you use the space? While you’re looking for color inspiration, also consider how you use the room. Is it a place to relax, work, or play? Color can influence mood. What mood would you like to create? You can read more about this in a previous blog post.
               3) What’s in the space? Before you select a paint color, you should consider the other features in the room, such as its furniture and design elements. Wall color is just one feature, and it needs to complement other elements or items in the space for a cohesive and professional look. Consider other colors in the space, including the colors of the floor, furniture, architectural details such as moldings, and soft fabrics such as curtains or cushions.
               4) Paint samples: Always put up several paint samples on at least two walls of the room before settling on a color. Paint a square no less than one foot by two feet. Select walls that receive different amounts of natural lighting. Check the colors throughout the day, because as natural light shifts, so might the appearance of the color.

FAQ

1. What is the first step in choosing paint colors for my home?

Start by considering the overall color palette you want to achieve. This usually involves selecting two to three main colors that will work together throughout your space. Think about the mood you want to create and whether you prefer cool, warm, or neutral tones. For a cohesive look, build a palette that flows seamlessly from room to room.

2. How does lighting affect paint color selection?

Lighting—both natural and artificial—dramatically impacts how paint colors appear. A color that looks perfect in the store or on a paint chip can look very different in your home depending on the time of day and the type of light. Always test paint samples on your walls and observe them at various times to see how light changes their appearance.

3. Why is it important to test paint samples before making a final decision?

Testing paint samples directly on your walls allows you to see how the color interacts with your room’s lighting, furnishings, and fixed elements like flooring or countertops. Paint samples on multiple walls, especially those facing different directions, to ensure you love the color in all conditions.

4. Should I consider existing elements in my home when choosing paint colors?

Absolutely. Permanent features such as cabinetry, flooring, countertops, and large furniture pieces should guide your color choices. Select paint colors that complement these elements to create a harmonious and balanced look throughout your home.

5. What are some common mistakes to avoid when selecting paint colors?

Avoid choosing colors that are too bold or stark unless you’re aiming for a very specific style. Many homeowners go too light, which can result in washed-out colors, especially in bright sunlight. Also, don’t skip the step of testing samples, and be cautious of choosing whites that are too bright, as they can appear harsh and glaring. Always take your time with the selection process and consider how each color will look in your unique space.
