Is Home Ready for Summer?

By mike@homeworkspainting.com | Published June 2, 2026

You might not have noticed, but summer is knocking on spring’s door, asking to be let in! This is a great time to start thinking about summer home prep, so we’ve created a practical checklist to get your home ready for the hot, humid season.

Doors

Inspect the weather stripping around exterior doors. Seal any gaps around the frames with caulk.

Windows

This is a good time to clean your windows or hire a window cleaner. Be sure to avoid cleaning on sunny days, as this can cause streaks.

Front Door

Check your front door’s paint for chipping, bubbling, or peeling. Any of these can indicate it’s time for a fresh coat! Be sure to use a high-quality exterior paint, especially if your door gets direct sun, or call a professional painter to do the work.

Walkways & Driveway

Power-wash walkways and driveways, and address any cracks before they spread. We recommend hiring a professional for power-washing to avoid injury or damage.

Flower Beds

Pull weeds, add 1–2 inches of topsoil, edge the flower beds, and finish with 2–3 inches of quality mulch.

Gutters

Clear out leaves and debris, then wait for the next rain and watch for leaks or breaks in your gutters and downspouts. (Considering hiring a professional accustomed to working on a ladder.)

Lawn

Clear leaves from the lawn and the base of trees and shrubs, de-thatch the grass, and apply fertilizer according to the manufacturer’s instructions.

Sprinklers

Before turning the system back on, run each zone individually and inspect every head for broken parts or cracked pipes.

Exterior Siding & Paint

Do a post-winter walkthrough and look for damage, wood rot, or areas where paint or stain has worn away. Catching it now prevents bigger — and more expensive — problems later.

Deck

Power-wash or hand-clean the deck with a specialty outdoor cleaner to remove dirt, mildew, and mold that built up over winter.
