To Paint or Not to Paint Your Cabinets

Painting your cabinets might be the refresh they desperately need. It’s typically a fraction of the cost of replacing them—and when done by pros, the results can be transformative. They can look new without being new.

Here’s what to know about painting cabinets:

• Paint type matters.

Latex and oil-based paints are the go-to choices for cabinets. Latex dries faster and cleans up without a fuss, while oil-based paints are known for their durability. Most contractors have a favorite depending on the cabinet material and the desired finish, and will walk you through what makes the most sense for your project.

• Prep work isn’t optional (trust us).

Cabinets get handled, bumped, splattered on, and generally treated like the workhorses they are—so the prep stage is absolutely essential. Good prep includes cleaning, sanding, and making sure every surface is ready to bond with paint. We spend a considerable portion of our time on this step because it’s what makes a paint job look flawless and last.

We don’t paint until we’ve thoroughly prepped!

• Spray vs. brush and roll.

Both methods can look great, but spraying gives that ultra-smooth factory finish. The catch? It requires professional equipment and extensive masking to prevent overspray from turning your kitchen into a modern art installation. If needed, we’ll remove the doors and drawer fronts to spray them off-site for the best possible finish.

• Some cabinets may need stripping first.

In certain situations, the only way to ensure the new paint adheres properly to the surface is to strip the paint first. We’ll let you know during your consultation whether it’s necessary.

If you’re thinking about refreshing your cabinets, we’d love to take a look. Book a consultation, and we’ll walk you through your options and provide a detailed estimate. As one of Northern Virginia’s most trusted painting contractors, we’re here to help you get a cabinet finish you’ll love for years.
