Project Profile – Basement Transformation in Leesburg
By Mike | Published March 2, 2021
The last ten or so months have offered a reminder of the importance of home and the spaces we occupy daily. Our work as a painting contractor in Northern Virginia has never been more important to us, and our commitment to helping our clients hasn’t diminished. We have been taking the recommended precautions to safeguard our crews and our clients during the pandemic as we’ve tackled our clients’ projects. Recently, we completed work on the lower level of a beautiful, large Leesburg home. Our clients, a very nice family, wanted to spruce up the area to give their children a great place to hang out.
The Project:
Our work was like adding icing to the cake. The homeowners added new trim molding to add design interest and elegance. We came in to repaint all of the walls, ceilings, and newly added trim (and added caulk and putty). We also repainted cabinets in the bar area and the bathroom to update their look.
The Details:
Stairway & Lower Landing: Painted ceiling (2 coats), walls (2 coats), trim & doors (1 coat to match existing color).
Gym: Painted ceiling (2 coats), walls (2 coats), trim & doors (1 coat to match existing color).
Small Hallway: Painted ceiling (2 coats), walls (2 coats), trim & doors (1 coat to match existing color).
Lower Level Bathroom: Painted ceiling (2 coats), walls (2 coats), trim & door (1 coat to match existing color); Texture removal – included skimming walls with joint compound, sanding, and priming the walls.
Lower Level Bedroom: Repaired, spot primed, and touched up the ceiling (2 coats).
TV Room: Painted ceiling (2 coats), walls (2 coats), trim & doors (1 coat to match existing color).
Bar Area: Painted ceiling (2 coats), walls (2 coats), trim & doors (1 coat to match existing color).
Pool Room: Painted ceiling (2 coats), walls (2 coats), trim & doors (1 coat to match existing color).
Sewing Room: Painted ceiling (2 coats).
Materials:
We used Sherwin Williams Interior paint:
Walls: Duration Home, flat, matte, or satin
Ceilings: ProMar Ceiling White, flat
Trim/Doors: ProClassic, semi-gloss
Bathrooms: Use a satin or semi-gloss finish on the walls and ceiling
Preparation:
The preparation is a critical element of any paint project. Without proper, professional preparation, the integrity of the paint is compromised. Paint could chip, flake, or begin diminishing earlier than it should.
Our standard prep work involves:
All furnishing and floors will be covered and protected.
All stress cracks and nail pops will be repaired with fiberglass joint tape, blocked, skimmed, and sanded.
Glossy surfaces and trim will be sanded and cleaned, (as needed), to assure proper paint adhesion.
Scrape and sand rough areas due to previous paint failure.
Caulk all wood trim work as necessary.
Apply an oil-based sealer to water stains and tannin wood stains.
Work areas will be cleaned up and debris will be taken away.
We think the project turned out beautifully and expect the family’s children will enjoy their new space.
