The Essential Guide to Paint Sheens

Homeowners often focus their attention on choosing the right paint color. But as Northern Virginia painting pros, we know that a paint’s sheen is the unsung hero of a great paint job.

Pick the wrong sheen for a room (or other painted surfaces), and you’ll have scuffs, smudges, and “why did I do this?” moments for years. That’s why picking the right one matters. The right sheen will help your walls look and age better.

Here’s our room-by-room guide to ideal paint sheens—and why they matter.

Bathrooms

Bathrooms experience moisture and steam, and they require frequent cleaning, so sheen really makes a difference. A satin or semi-gloss finish is the best bet because it resists humidity, wipes clean easily, and helps prevent mildew. Bonus: satin and semi-gloss sheens reflect light, making smaller bathrooms feel brighter and fresher.

Kids’ Rooms

If fingerprints, crayons, and mystery marks are part of your home life, we suggest eggshell or satin. These finishes are durable enough for cleaning without highlighting every bump and dent in the wall. Flat paint in a kid’s room is basically an invitation to regret.

Hallways

Hallways are high-traffic zones, meaning lots of hands, bags, and accidental wall bumps and bruises. A satin finish is ideal here. It’s tough, washable, and holds up beautifully over time while still looking polished.

Home Offices

For home offices, the typical goal is calm and low-glare. Eggshell or satin works well, depending on the room’s lighting. These sheens reduce harsh reflections during video calls while still being easy to maintain. While a flat sheen can work in a low-traffic office, remember that it also shows wall imperfections and scuffs more than any other sheen!

Why Sheen Selection Matters

A paint’s sheen affects durability, cleaning ability, light reflection, and even how smooth your walls look. The right choice can make a space feel brighter, cleaner, and more refined—while the wrong sheen can highlight flaws and wear out quickly.

Bottom line: sheen isn’t a detail. It’s a practical design decision. Choose wisely, and your walls will thank you.
